One man is still missing after his ATV went through the ice near Grandview Beach, Saskatchewan. The report from The StarPhoenix states that the local fire department was unable to conduct a proper search due to the dangerous condition of the ice. Authorities are currently waiting on a team of professional divers who specialize in ice and cold water search and rescue. The man, who’s name has yet to be released, has been missing since late Saturday morning.
The article details the accident, which apparently involved two men on an ATV when the ice cracked and gave way. One of the men was able to pull himself out of the freezing water. From there, he attempted to drag the second man out of the water, which was unsuccessful before losing sight of him all together. He then called 911 and was treated on-scene, but was not taken to the Hospital. The situation is currently under investigation as the local police department is scheduled to bring in the cold water diving team today. They were previously unavailable and therefore unable to make it out to Grandview Beach during the weekend.
This incident has raise the spread of awareness regarding winter ice. While most thick ice can be considerably safe to walk and skate on, there can be thinned areas and fluctuation in outside temperature can drastically effect the solidity of ice. It may not be uncommon for ATVs and snowmobiles to take to the ice of a pond or lake during the winter season. This, however, does not mean that the ice is stable and every year lives are lost due to recreational vehicles that fall through unstable ice. This is because all the weight from these machines are focused into a small radius and thus putting a significant amount of pressure on a single space. One Stop Motors encourages everyone to take this into consideration and avoid travelling on ice with any motorized vehicle. This is the only true way to ensure an accident such as this from happening.
